Raise your hand if you’re a chronically stressed person. ✋ I can definitely at times be in that club but knowing that I hold onto stress so easily, I am always intentionally looking more and more into ways to reset and regulate my nervous system. We hold onto stress and tension in so many ways. Not just in our thoughts, but we hold it in our body.
Stress can come in the form of a tight jaw, raised shoulders, or even the way we tense up right before we open our inbox. Stress can hang around us like a low hum underneath our day.
When your nervous system thinks it’s under threat — the “threat” of a full inbox or uncertainty about the future — it stays tight in your body and it stays on guard.
The question to ask for me (and for you if you can relate!) is:
How can I signal safety in my body?
Sometimes that looks like getting morning light in your eyes or it’s drinking a warming beverage of your choice. An action of some kind that is just long enough for your brain and body to realize that you are safe. 🫶
Healing from chronic stress or burnout requires retraining your body’s system to move from survival mode into ease and that can start from the smallest of daily actions.
